The semi-high speed train Tejas Express ran at 110 kmph on its inaugural run against the railways’ claim of 160 kmph.
Tejas Express, a semi-high speed train, is supposed to run at 200 kmph. But, on its inaugural run between Mumbai to Karmali (Goa), it touched a maximum speed of 110 kmph.
A few days before it was flagged off by railway minister Suresh Prabhu on May 22, Indian Railways claimed that the train can run at a speed of 160 kmph despite constraints related to rail tracks.
...

Member (traffic), railway board, Mohd. Jamshed said it was found that the train is running within permissible limit of 110 kmph due to reasons related to tracks in the Konkan railway which is known for its rugged terrain.

“Speed of a train depends on rolling stocks and fixed infrastructure i.e. tracks. Konkan railway’s track passes through several tunnels and its topography and movement pattern is quite different. We have to ensure protection around tunnels due to frequent landslides. Because of these reasons, the train is allowed to run at 110 kmph. The speed would be increased to 120 kmph after a few months,” Jamshed said.

The railway board member said the newly unveiled Mumbai-Karmali Tejas Express took almost same time as its New Delhi-Bhopal Shatabdi which is country’s longest Shatabdi service. It takes eight hours and 25 minutes to cover 706 km from Delhi to Bhopal.
“Tejas took eight hours and 30 minutes to cover a distance of 703 km between Mumbai and Karmali, which is fair enough,” he told Governance Now.

He elaborated that even the speed of Bhopal Shatabdi varies from station to station because of various factors. “Till Agra, Bhopal Shatabdi runs at 140 kmph and its speed gets reduced to 120 kmph after crossing Bina station. Speed depends on tracks, different conditions and sections,” he said.

Jamshed said that the railways is working to ensure its coaches and locomotives run at a speed of 200 kmph.

When asked why Tejas’s fare is 20 percent higher than other Shatabdis, he said every coach of Tejas costs around Rs 3.45 crore against an LHB coach which costs Rs 2.43 crore. “We are providing passengers with sophisticated facilities which they won’t get in the roadways. A bus takes over 14 hours to reach Goa from Mumbai which is uncomfortable too. But Tejas offers a comfortable ride to people,” he said.

* Actual magnitude of the operating speed of trains, their avg speed and the journey times has really become a vexed issue. Announcement of Member (traffic), RB that BPL Shatabdi does NDLS-AGC at max speed of 140kmph (against the earlier reports of 150kmph which made it speed record holder prior to introduction of Gatimaan) only adds to confusion.
-
* When BPL Shatabdi was introduced in late 1980s, it was reported that its speed was 140kmph-NDLS-AGC, 120kmph(upto JHS) and and only 110 kmph beyond that along with many upto 70kmph speed restrictions in
...
BPL-Bina stretch. Still the train NDLS-BPL was done in 7:40-7:50 hrs only.
* 30 years later and after track/ signalling upgradation (NDLS-AGC-from 140 to 150/160kmph, AGC-JHS 120-130, JHS-BINA from 110-130 & BINA-BPL from 110-120, and removal of Temp. Speed restrictions, still the (NDLS-HBJ) Shatabdi take 8:30 minutes or 8:15 hrs for NDLS-BPL run i.e. 30 minutes more, even if 4 additional brief halts (Mathura, Dholpur, Morena, Lalitpur) are taken into account, the train is taking about 5-10 minutes more in-spite of increased speed!
-
* Similarly it was reported and perceived that max speed of DDR-MAO JS is 120kmph and CSTM-Karmali-Tejas shall operate at 130kmph and now reports that Member (traffic), RB announcing that Tejas speed was actually restricted to just 110kmph during the run due to (poor?) conditions of KR track. Further, it was reported yesterday that the train departed CSTM about an hour late on inaugural run and reached destination 15 minutes before time.
* after running at just 110kmph instead of scheduled speed of 130kmph, if Tejs could "make up" 1 hrs, then if operated at 130 kmph it could probably reduce the journey time by 2 hrs.
* CSTM-Karmali actual distance is just 552kms and inflated chargeable distance may be 703 kms as stated by Member (traffic), so Tejas doing just 552 kms(@65kmph) in 8:30 hrs is actually much slower than BPL shatabdi doing 710km in 8:25/8:30 hrs (@84kmph) and not the equally fast as reported.
* A premium train operating at 130kmph and on top priority on the route is expected to give an avg speed of about 75kmph. CSTM-HWH-Duronto give 75kmph avg speed inspite of operating at 110kmph only.

Agree with you in all aspects but just an angle to look at is the increase in traffic on such routes. In the context of BPL Shatabdi, the train might not find room to run freely (despite high speeds) for a long time due to the intensity of traffic congestion than what was in the 1980s.
To explain it further, Mumbai-Pune trains can be taken as an example..earlier in 90s Mumbai-Pune Deccan queen used to cover the distance in lesser time compared to now, due to added traffic congestion which wasn't prevailing during erstwhile British era, hence even speed upgradations wouldn't make a much difference as route capacity needs to be enhanced first. This case is applicable to most routes on

After a comfortable trip to Goa, you could soon board the high-speed Tejas Express to travel from Mumbai to Ahmedabad.
While flagging off the first Tejas Express train between Mumbai and Karmali station in Goa on Monday, railway minister Suresh Prabhu announced the introduction of the new service between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
“Very soon Tejas express will start running on Mumbai -Ahmedabad route. It will be launched in some other states as well,”said Prabhu, adding that the rail travel experience in India will be redefined with the introduction of Tejas .

Tejas Express flagged off: Know everything about Mumbai-Goa high-speed train
Tejas Express housefull for first ride from Mumbai, bookings full till May 24, plan your Goa trip now
According to western railway officials, the plan was dropped as the train will cover the distance between the two cities in less than six hours and will be out of use for a long time.
Currently, Mumbai and Ahmedabad are connected via Shatabdi express and double-decker express trains.
Railway officials are hopeful of a good response, as businessmen and merchants might prefer travelling on the ultra-luxury premium train which is capable of running at a speed of 200kmph.
Along with WiFi, GPS and CCTV, the Tejas Express has several unique amenities such as automatic doors, secured gangway, infotainment screen for each passenger, reading lights for each seat, vacuum bio-toilets, e-leather cover seats and touch free taps in toilets.
The train also has tea- and coffee-vending machines, along with local cuisine in catering service and staffers in local attire of Goa.

* This is a logical step, i.e. announcement of BCT-ADI Tejas, because the earlier announced BCT-ST was expected to be extended to ADI sooner or later. If the extension comes with the introduction of this train is much better.
* BCT-ST-ADI shall be the first route for 300kmph+ Bullet trains, which are the ultimate trains for the business class travellers. Tejas is just a step from current premium business class train (Shatabdi) towards the Bullet trains.
* It would be a good step to introduce Tejas trains on the BCT-ST-ADI route, so

जबकि इसकी Over All Rank 153 है.

Tejas Express, scheduled to flag off Monday afternoon, will come with many modern technologies on board, such as Wi-Fi, infotainment system, LED TVs, CCTV, etc. At top speed of 200kmph, the all-new Tejas Express is faster than Shatabdi Express, and has a graffiti proof body, fire and smoke detection facilities. The doors of all 13 coaches, including the executive coach, are centrally controlled.
"Tomorrow is going to be a historic day for the Indian Railways when Tejas Express, which boasts of ultra-modern amenities like on board infotainment, Wi-Fi, CCTV, fire and smoke detection facilities, tea/coffee vending machine etc. will make its maiden run from Mumbai," D K Sharma, General Manager of the Central Railway, said. Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Mumbai (CSTM) likened Tejas Express with an "aeroplane moving on the ground".
"I would say that traveling by this premium train would provide a better experience than flying in a plane. This train would pass through the lush greenery of the Konkan belt, giving a picturesque view of the seashore, mountains and valleys, which will let you enjoy the journey and not just the destination (Goa)," he said.
When asked about reports that a few miscreants had damaged the windows of the Tejas Express, even before its launch, the official said, "We have taken proper note of it and it is no more an issue now."
Tejas Express route and schedule
Giving the details of the route and schedule of the train, Sharma said it would run between Mumbai and Karmali (Goa) five days a week during non-monsoon period and three days a week during monsoon by halting at Dadar, Thane, Panvel, Ratnagiri and Kudal stations.
"Train No 22119 Superfast Tejas Express will leave CST at 5am every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from May 24 and arrive at Karmali at 1.30pm the same day.
Train No 22120 Superfast Tejas Express will leave Karmali at 2.30pm on every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, starting from May 23 and arrive at the CST at 9pm," he said.
This train will have one executive AC chair car with 56 seating capacity and 12 AC chair cars with 78 seat capacity of each coach, Sharma said.
Tejas Express ticket bookings
CR's Chief Commercial Manager Shailendra Kumar expressed happiness over the "positive response" shown by passengers in booking advance tickets for the train.
Kumar, who accompanied Sharma during the train inspection, added, "The ticket booking started within minutes of its opening this morning and in the first four hours, 207 passengers booked tickets for the AC chair car and 10 for executive AC chair car."
Sharing details of the fares, Kumar said Tejas Express's executive class fare has been fixed at Rs. 2,680 with food and Rs. 2,525 without food, and for AC chair car the fare has been fixed at Rs 1,280 with food and Rs. 1,155 without food.
Kumar also informed that the railways has planned optional onboard catering services.
"If a passenger does not opt for catering services at the time of booking the ticket and decides to buy meals onboard, an extra amount of Rs. 50 per service in addition to the prescribed catering charges, shall be charged subject to availability," he added.

Large windows, elegant design, more leg space and a speed that can go up to 200 kmph are the premium features that make the train around 20 per cent costlier than the Shatabdi express.
"Tejas Express is a semi high speed train having modern on board facilities, enhanced passenger comfort and showcases the future of Train travel in India," divisional railway manager Ravinder Goyal said here on Sunday, as the train was put on display on platform no. 18 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST). Several passengers and railway staff were seen taking selfies with the new train.
The coaches also have new age automatic sliding doors, modern bio-vacuum toilets, water level indicators, tap sensors, hand dryers, integrated braille displays, WiFi, tea-coffee vending machines, aircraft-like snack tables, CCTV cameras, fire & smoke detection and suppression system.
The IRCTC has also offered local cuisine and a celebrity chef menu, for which passengers will have to shell out about Rs 1000-1500 more than the tickets without catering facility.
The train will make five stops and reach Goa in 7 hours 30 minutes, saving around two hours of travel time. However, the speed restrictions on the Konkan railway line during the monsoon would mean that the train won't be able to achieve its fullest speed potential on the Mumbai-Goa route very soon.
The Tejas train is expected to ply on New Delhi-Chandigarh and Lucknow-Anand Vihar(T) after the Mumbai CST-Karmali route.

* "Flight on wheels" was actually planned way back in 2004, as Madgaon-CSTM Shatabdi with a travel time of just 6 hours. Branding Tejas as "Flight on Wheels", which does about 550km journey in 8.5 hrs journey at an avg speed of just 65 kmph, gives a very poor impression about the standard of IR.
* Tejas cannot be branded as "luxury on wheels" also because much higher benchmark has already been set by the ultimate luxury trains operating on IR network like Palace-on-wheels, Maharaja-Express, Royal-Rajasthan-on-Wheels, Deccan-Odyssy, Golden-Chariot etc

Fare list released, tickets to cost 3-times more than other trains The Tejas Express is scheduled to leave the station at 3 pm on Monday. By: Express News Service | Mumbai | Published:May 21, 2017 2:47 am
Tejas rakes will have facilites like LED TVs, coffee vending machines and GPS-based information display. Oinam Anand The Central Railway on Saturday released the fares for the premium train, Tejas Express. According to the fare chart, commuters will have to pay almost three times compared to what they pay for normal trains to reach Karmali, Goa, in the first air-conditioned compartment and chair-car of Tejas Express. Air-conditioning of the rake and better passenger facilities are cited to be the reasons for higher fares. The basic cost,

including catering charges, in the first AC compartment of Tejas Express is Rs 2,680 while the one in CC compartment is Rs 1,680 per person. The rates are at least three times higher than the basic cost of Jan Shatabadi train that takes a similar route. The price is between Rs 500 and Rs 900, according to the choice of compartments. The rate for the eight-hour journey in the AC double decker Madgaon-Panvel train is Rs 795 for a chair car seat and Rs 1,880 for third AC. The railways had said that the rates for the train would be 30 per cent higher than a Shatabdi — a premium rake catering to different destinations. The Tejas rake includes different facilities, including LED TVs at the back of the seats, coffee vending machines, CCTV cameras and GPS-based information display. “The bookings will start from 8 am on Sunday. As usual, the bookings would close four hours before the journey commences on Monday afternoon,” a CR official said. Vijay A, a commuter, said: “While the rate of a seat in CC compartment is at par with other rakes, the rates for first AC compartment is very high. The higher rates for the tickets must match with the service offered.” The train would be inaugurated at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) on Monday by Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu. The Tejas Express is scheduled to leave the station at 3 pm on Monday.

Rly min Suresh Prabhu to flag off maiden CST-Karmali run on May 22.
India’s first Tejas rake, a long-distance passenger train offering enhanced passenger comfort, communications and entertainment facilities, rolled out of the Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Kapurthala on Thursday afternoon. The train is expected to reach Mumbai CST on May 20.
The 20-coach train, the country’s first Tejas rake, manufactured by RCF Kapurthala, will run five days a week, from Mumbai CST to Karmali, Goa.
“The

train departed for Mumbai this afternoon. This is the first Tejas train built by RCF Kapurthala,” Baldev Raj, PRO, Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala, told Mumbai Mirror.
The train coming to Mumbai has 20 coaches — three power cars (with generator units), three executive chair cars and 14 chair cars. Of these, 15 cars will be available for daily passenger use — one executive chair car (plus two spare); 12 chair cars (plus two spare); and two power cars (plus one spare).
The Tejas train has a potential top speed of 200 kmph, complemented by an electro-pneumatic assist brake system.
Doors are controlled by a guard panel — the train will not start until all doors are closed. Dust-sealed gangways ensure reduced dirt and sound.
The train has ergonomically designed leather upholstery, with high backrests to ensure continuous view of LED screens. The seats have armrests, bottle-holders, and enhanced leg support (for executive chair cars). Passengers also get personalised call-bells along with reading lights on the luggage rack.
Wi-Fi, infotainment system
The train has a state-of-the-art infotainment system: Wi-Fi connections, along with entertainment LCD screens with touch controls for each passenger. The screen has a headphone socket and a server controller for relaying recorded content, advertising and safety instructions. The system can also be upgraded for live TV, and includes USB charging.
Fire detection system
There are eight smoke sensors in the passenger area – two in the corridor and one in the electric panel – and heat-activated sensors in three toilets. Water-mist spray technology with numerous nozzles has been installed in the train to combat fires, along with 80-litre water cylinders.
The train’s CCTV system, made up of six hi-res cameras – two in the passenger area, and two at each doorway, has night vision capabilities and facial recognition even in low-light conditions, along with real-time GPS tagging of videos with speed, location and time.
Touchless fittings
The restrooms have touchless fittings — taps, hand dryers, soap dispensers — marble-finish counters with antigraffti coating, gel-coated shelves and door-latch-activated lights.
“We are going to start the Indian Railways’ first Tejas service from May 22. Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu will inaugurate this prestigious service that will operate between Mumbai and Goa,” DK Sharma, GM, Central Railways, told Mirror. Sharma confirmed that the Tejas rake had departed from RCF Kapurthala on Thursday and would reach Mumbai on May 20.
Prabhu will inaugurate the train via remote control at a function in Dadar on May 22.

all set to roll out the luxurious feature-packed Tejas Express whose coaches have been designed to bear speeds of up to 200 kmph! Reports suggest that the first rake of the new train will start playing between Mumbai and Goa - so get ready to zip across short distances with infotainment and luxury on board! While the coaches of the train have been designed to take speeds of up to 200 kmph (clearly with an aim to increase speed later), for now the train will ply at a maximum speed of 130 kmph. Tejas Express has also been proposed for Delhi-Chandigarh and Surat to Mumbai route.
From WiFi, star chiefs-chosen menu to LCD screens for entertainment - here's an exclusive preview of the Tejas Express!
The Tejas Express has redesigned seats with e-leather. There are 14 non-executive chair cars and they can seat up to 72 passengers each (3+2) configuration. The coaches have energy-efficient LED lights and digital destination display boards.

The Executive Chair car seats have an adjustable head-rest, comfortable arm support and even offer airline-like leg support. The facility of leg support is missing in the non-Executive chair car.
The central table in the Tejas Express will also have infotainment screens ensuring that passengers sitting in the middle don't lose out on this new feature.

In line with the train's overall luxurious feel, the train's toilets have also been given a modern feel. Equipped with soap dispensers, touch-less water taps, odour-control system and occupancy indicators, the toilets in Tejas Express are a step up from the usual chair car trains.
Each chair car has a small pantry unit which is equipped with a boiler that dispenses hot water, a heating chamber, a refrigerating box and a chilling unit. The pantry also has a soup machine.
Yet another airline-like feature in the Tejas Express is that each seat has an attendant call button facility. This call button/bell is integrated with the berth reading light.

The coaches are equipped with CCTV cameras for better security. Additionally, a modern fire and smoke detection system has been installed. The power car has a fire suppression system.
In line with Indian Railways vision to make tracks defecation free, Indian Railways has installed bio-vaccum toilets in Tejas Express. This would also ensure that as against normal toilets that need 10 litres of water per flush, only 1.5 litre of water would be consumed.

The bogie of Tejas coaches have stainless steel discs - this means that the braking system is more efficient and the breaking distance is less.
The vinyl-wrapped specially designed exteriors are graffiti proof. The exterior has a bright colour theme of orange and yellow. The colourful exterior is in line with the looks of the new Humsafar and Antyodaya Express. Tejas Express has a dust-proof/sealed inter car gangway.

I think the colour is not that good....i mean the colour of vinyl pasting. It was not attractive. Humsafar livery is too good. I think that earlier Tejas livery was better and sophisticated. But as you said the vestibules are too good.

At present route is fit for 120kmph in non-monsoon season.
But The route is tested for 160kmph.
And even this Tejas will be a slow train with average speed between Mumbai to Karmali/Madgaon to be 53-55kmph only.
Even after inauguration of Tejas, the TVC rajdhani and MAO Janshatabdi still will be the fastest trains on this section.

It can be approved. Because it was built to handle high speeds like 160 kmph. Also it is less of curves and inclines. But due to few accidents, speed was reduced. Only in monsoon, it is little bit dangerous to run beyond 100 kmph.

Livery looks just fine BTW talking about the Max speed in konkan, its only 120 km/hr and that too for only Rajdhanis. P-Way is fit for 160 km/hr run but bcoz some accidents in the past now its strictly confined to lower values.
