NAGPUR: The engineering department has been found prima facie responsible for the derailment of 12 wheat-laden wagons near Sonkhamb between Kalmeshwar and Katol, 40km from here, on January 30, railway sources said.
A rail weld found at the point of mishap has been sent for forensic tests at Railway Design and Standards Organization (RDSO), Lucknow. A report is expected by this month end. According to railway sources, the note prepared by the four-member committee of senior officials appointed by divisional railway manager (DRM) OP Singh to probe the mishap has pointed finger at the engineering department.
are also being made to show that there were contributory causes of derailment that involve other departments. For example, uneven loading may be named as another probable factor so the onus goes to commercial department from where the consignment was loaded or to hold carriage & wagons (C&W) department responsible.
Sources said cost of damage is also being shown on a lower side to reduce gravity of the mishap. Despite derailment of 12 wagons, some of them damaged badly, cost of C&W is shown at Rs70 lakh. "Cost is being put at a lower side, otherwise huge sum must have been lost considering overtime to workers engaged in revival of track, consignment loss, breakdown charges, diversion cost, punctuality loss etc"" said sources.
The detection of rail weld at the point of drop indicates rail breakage for which engineering department is responsible. When TOI tried to get official version, Central Railway public relations officer (PRO) P D Patil said nothing could be said at this moment. ""The rail break may have occurred due to derailment or derailment may have occurred due to rail breakage,"" said Patil.
"The report of four-member committee is yet to be submitted. We have sent the piece of rail weld found at the mishap site to Railway Design and Standards Organization (RDSO), Lucknow," said Patil.
