At the time of Inaugural, Jharkhand Swarnajayanti was a biweekly train. The train departing on Fridays from Hatia went via Gomoh, while the train departing on Tuesdays went via Daltonganj.
The friday departure was inaugurated as the 8605/06 (Now 12817/18) Jharkhand Swarna Jayanti express by the then railway minister Sri Ram Vilas Paswan on September 19th, 1997 at Ranchi station.
The Tuesday departure was inaugurated as 8603/04 (Now 12873/74) on the following Tuesday i.e., September 22nd, 1997.
