surprised to see a train on a road and yes, the steam loco. Is that steam loco in working condition?
Hello Arijit, the rail track is right in front of SBG main station entrance and goes to the old railway station (currently serving a yard), which used to ferry trains across river Ganga and Bramputra all the way to Assam through Bangladesh in pre independence times and across Ganga uptil early 70's.
The steam loco is just a souvenir for the town, as people are not ready to part with the last symbol of SBG's golden past. And sorry the loco is not working and is totally neglected by the rail administration.

How good would it have been if the loco would have been in working condition, moving in and around the station or at least maintained and kept at a proper place so that people could see it and admire its beauty.
Rail authorities had plans to dismantle it, as it is now of use to them and also occupying a line. It is due to public protest that it has survived 20 long years. Hope the authorities takes care of the heritage.
