Trip Report: My 1st DMU Experience:
A sudden trip was planned to viist Hogenakkal falls on sunday- but owing to crowd and weekend return rush, plans were made to reach DPJ on saturday night and return by sunday afternoon
As we pondered over the means to reach, my father suddenly asked me" There's a DPJ pass at 1830 right- why dont we take that" I said- "Fine-overexcited" for it was my journey by the DMU

a 2 hour permission at office and an auto we reached SBC at 1740 hrs- the arrival display board had decided to keep all platforms vacant- reason- SWR's King- 12628 Karnataka from NDLS was running 4 hrs late and expected to reach at 1830 hrs in unknown platform.. Its pair to NDLS had occupied PF-1 while the KCG bound 12786 occupied 3 and RPM WAP-7 occupied Pf-4 with the MKM Swarna pass
Slowly the screen came to life announcing 76553 leaving at 1830 from PF-6. the pair 76552 was running on time to YNK where tragedy struck in form of 12628 who also announced her arrival. anyway as usual, this rake enetered Pf-6 just as we entered and had a refereshment at IRCTC stall on Pf-6 at 18:00hrs
We boarded the rake resembling a complete 2S coach except for the fact everything was glowing in stainlesssteel- Slowly people cae to occupy the places. On Pf-5 KJM twin alcos stood detached from 16558 which now was overcrowded as the 16216 Chamundi ready to leave
KJM 20042 WDP-4 passed through PF-7 and went in opposite as a wDP-4B brought in the pass from MYS at 1815 onto Pf-9. 20042 now passed through Pf-8 and went to the other corner most likely to link the Raj.
At 1835hrs our DMU gave a horn- 1st from guard side and the 2nd from the loco and we proceeded just to meet the GTL twins entering the PF-4 with the overcrowded 12628.. We proceeded slowly towards the points with perfect DMU acceleration as AJJ WAM4 entered with the 56261 pass from AJJ. Had a halt at BNC and now we were occupied @ 85%.. KJM WDG-3A chugged passed with the 56513 KIK-SBC pass just as we left BNC and our next halt at BNCE saw about 10 people get down- Now this is perfect- A local that reaches BNCE in 20 mins almost saving an hour. At BYPL the DMU from Kolar, giving way to all other trains, now made her way to City delayed by an hour. At bYPl, our occupancy was Full seating with 5 standees
DMU acceleration was not felt for 1st time as our LP (or MM-Motorman) gave a good brake to cross past the points and slowly accelerated up the gradient. Bellandur Road was quickly despatched and at Carmelram, slight late running 12678 intercity waited for us with jam-packed train.. Occupancy kept increasing per station and Heelalige and anekal Road saw about 15 deboarding from our coach only for 30 more to get in
Regular refreshments moved about by local vendors carrying tea, ildy chutney, murukku (Chakli), kadalai (Chikki) etc etc.. People occupied all possible places and seemed happy despite not getting a seat. For major of them it was a good connector from Central and East bangalore to Sarjapur and Hosur Roads
Slowly we proceeded to halt at PF-2 of hosur at 19:55hrs- 1 hrs 20 mins for 56 kms seemed a viable option in our City traffic- though by road Hosur is 40kms, we know the outcome- But Surprise was another 70 people waiting at hosur to take this pass which is going to travel by max another 90 kms which is just 70 by road well connected by buses
post Hosur, the reason was understood- the culprits being the 1st 2 stations- Kelamangalam & Periyanagathunai.. Better reliable by train connection rather than bus...and cheaper..
The best part came here- The train was a DMU having a MPS restricted to 60 on a track which at some places restricts itself to 30.. and with a agressive schedule of covering 150 kms in 3hrs 10 mins meaning at any cost any minute delay would cause it unrecoverable...
After Hosur, is the section of the dry decidous forest section in Bangalore's backyard- starting from the Bannerghatta range and proceeding past along the border till Kaveri bifurcates it at Hogenakkal.. Repeated acceleration and burst of brakes later, the smaller stations were despactched. BTW its a DMU which reaches acceleration but not much to stop coz for the 90 kms from Hosur to Dharmapuri, the number of intermediate stations are just 5 meaning an average of station every 20 kms once.. So it was more like a bus with speed governors on a 4 lane road reaching MPS in 3rd gear and maintaining the same consistency all the way
The full moon gave us company all the way and as we proceeded into Palakkodu the station just before Dharmapuri, it was 10 mins past 9PM- Meaning we had 30 mins for last 20 kms.... Indicating the tight schedule- Had we waited at BYPL for 12678 to cross and had it taken 10 mins, we would have had just 20-20 at 60!!!!and we hade to make it somehow coz 16232 is at heels and any delay would make it responsible to get overtaken
Anyway we now proceed before we come to a abrupt halt- the LC wasnt closed and the signal stood red.. 2 hoots of horn later, we now moved and after a run through the darkness, reached the town lights and @ 9:35PM proceeded into Pf-1 of DPJ (According to local commuters a rare occurence train normally reaching at 9:50PM)-b tu still faster than bus at Rs. 35/- compared to Rs.105/-
