The Jharkhand state government is trying hard to convert Ranchi into a Railway zone that will cover the entire state. Currently the state is covered under 3 separate zones that are headquartered in other states :
South Eastern Railway - Kolkata (WB)
Eastern Railway - Kolkata (WB)

To be honest, Ranchi though population and area-wise is a smaller city than Patna (Not too much though as you seem to be thinking), on many indicators (Economic, Socio-Economic, Literacy, Liveability, Lifestyle, Education, Hospitality, Leisure, Sports, Medical Services, Employment, Civic Amenities etc) is far far better than your favorite place. You don't have to take my words, just look up any Economic / Socio economic survey online and get ur facts cleared. Having said that, what Rohan was trying to say that there is a direct relationship between no of services and passenger revenues. There are many high demanding routes from Rnc, Dhn, Tata but have never been fulfilled due to political ignorance towards Jharkhand. Now that Ranchi is going to be a major junction with lines going in 4/5 directions, revenues are bound to increase manifolds.. There's a huge demand but no supply unfortunately due to apathy of many years....
