Integral Coach Factory (ICF), the Indian Railways’s oldest and premier coach manufacturing unit based in Chennai, has recorded a 40 per cent increase in production this year. With this, it has overtaken China’s largest coach manufacturing unit, to become the largest railcar builder in the world, a senior railway official said on Friday.

Official statistics released by ICF show that...

“This is extremely good even considering manufacturing units in the private sector,” a senior official said. In fact, in the 2016-17 financial year, ICF had built only 1,976

For instance in 2018-19, it brought out Train-18, which is India’s first and fastest train without a locomotive — it runs like EMUs do. ICF will manufacture 43 more T-18 rakes.
Similarly, ICF also made EMU and MEMU rakes where the electrical equipment, which was previously on-board the coaches, was transferred below the coaches. This increased the passenger capacity by 10 per cent; meaning at least 200 more commuters on the suburban section can travel on every trip.
