RailFans don't miss their train. Why? Because they go to the station HOURS before the actual departure of their Train - to watch OTHER trains depart. - Prince Maan

Salt pans, big and small!. This really is a route I cannot recommend enough. It's quite something else in the monsoon season. I first traveled up this line on a rainy, stormy day in July 2010, and the dried pans were all filled up and vibrantly colored. . The pale pans are the ones where evaporation has finished, leaving behind the salt. The purple ones are the ponds which are almost finished evaporating (and have a high level of salt). Lower than that are the orange pools, and the green ones are the ones that were freshly filled from the lake's...

While awaiting the green, found myself parked next to a large BOXNHL rake carrying a consignment of limestone gitti by Rajasthan State Mines and Minerals Limited, Jaisalmer, and bound for the steel mills at far-off Durgapur.. I'm sure there's a message in there for the "state X runs on the tax bucks of state Y" folk.

Nawa lies on the western edge of the Devyani-Shakambari salt lakes. As a result, you see a lot of salt related works here.. These are photos of salt factories, where they process and refine impure salt. From here on, the train cuts through the Sambhar lake. If I'm lucky, I should be able to capture a few salt pans where they trap water to evaporate it and get impure salt.

You cross the edge of the Aravalis as you go from Kuchaman to Nawa. From Thathana Mithri, the range stretches from horizon to horizon in the direction of Kuchaman.. This makes the area a prime site for hillforts, and between Kuchaman and Nawa, you can see two of these. One was too far for me to have any luck capturing it, although it is readily visible. I was able to capture the other. There's a third fort too, in the city of Kuchaman proper (some seven km from the station).

Makrana is famous for its white marble quarries, which supplied marble for some famous monuments both nationally and internationally. These include the Taj Mahal..Geologists can't quite agree on how the marble got here. Marble is formed by the action of pressure and temperature on limestone across geological aeons, and about 90% of limestone on earth is formed by marine animals like corals. This typically caps its age to about 200 million years. .The confounder in Makrana is the dip-slip fault that embedded the limestone that formed the marble here is about 1.1-1.4 billion year old, formed during the mid Proterozoic when...

The iconic railbus that serves the MTD-MTC line. Like the DEMUs that ply the general region, this, too, is homed and serviced at the workshop at Merta Road Junction.

The land near Gotan is pretty dry (though available water visibly increases as you draw closer to Merta). As a result people use some creative techniques to harvest water.. Like this enterprising farmer, who constructed a mud wall in part of his farm, and lined the inside with plastic, turning it into an easy to create, elevated pond. It was being filled with a long, long pipe when I passed it by.

Gotan and the neighbouring hamlet of Kharia Khangar have many white cement plants and lime kilns big and small. The cylindrical structures are lime kilns. They have a well-like opening at the top, and a firepit at the base. When a batch of limestone needs to be processed, it is first broken up into small pieces using hammers and then carried over and tossed in the opening. Once the kiln has been charged, it keeps on running for hours, emitting a pale, greenish smoke from the top. Later, the fire is doused and the lime removed from the kiln.
