For a new organism to be formed, induced mutation is responsible. Either bcoz of high exposure to UV radiation or any chemical agent. Spontaneous mutation never leads to a formation of new species else we would be seeing every now and then a new sub-species of homo sapiens around us. At the time of origin of life, earth had volatile environment that facilitated mutation which isn't present in current scenario.

And that spontaneous variation leads to genetic disorder and not towards the formation of a new species. Natural selection and progressive evolution are the main cause towards the formation of a new species. What you are saying is based on the mutation theory of evolution by Hugo De Vries which was discarded later.

I am not saying about the spontaneous evolution of life suggested by Hugo...I am talking about the survival the fittest and species evolution in competitive environment...

Ah...Darwin. His theory of survival is also based on natural selection not on Mutation. Cutting the things, Progressive evolution and natural selection are main cause behind the formation of new species. Mutation has very little impact+ Mutation mostly leads to a destructive form. With time evolution will happen in these rats and a new species could evolve but not all of a sudden bcoz of this mutation. Mutation and all of a sudden formation of a new species suits better for a Movie story like X-Man.
