with Maharashtra governmnet for three projects in Mumbai (approximately ₹45,000 crore), and nine in Maharashtra worth ₹22,000 crore. This was announced at a joint press conference by the General Managers of Western and Central Railways and Chairman of Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation here on Friday. Projects under the MUTP III seek to decongest the Mumbai suburban network by adding additional line capacity, such as the quadrupling of Virar Dahanu Road section of Western Railway, doubling of Panvel-Karjat section, and a new suburban corridor between Kalyan and Navi Mumbai. This will be done using an elevated link between Airoli and Kalwa which will help passengers avoid changing trains at Thane. Trespass control will be done at 22 locations on Central and Western Railways, and 47 rakes of 12 cars each will also be bought under the project. These rakes will be connected by vestibules, have automatic door closing facility and LED lighting. In addition, 1,496 PoS machines have also been ordered for tickets reservation counters, unreserved tickets, parcel booking and catering, ushering in electronic payments across Central Railway. Of this, about 400 have already been installed. MoU with State Indian Railways will also be signing MoUs with the Maharashtra government for 12 projects, three in Mumbai and nine in other locations. These include the 72-km long Virar-Vasai-Panvel new double line, Bandra-Virar elevated corridor on a public-private-participation model (PPP), besides the Mumbai CST-Panvel elevated corridor totalling close ₹45000 crore.
