DHENKANAL: The Dhenkanal Daily Passengers’ Association has urged the railway authorities to provide the facility of return ticket booking for general coach at the century-old railway station of the district headquarters for better economic returns and convenience of passengers.
They said in absence of the facility, several passengers who commute between Bhubaneswar and Puri on a daily basis besides tourists and businessmen are facing difficulties. They also demanded that more Express trains passing through Dhenkanal should stop at the station.
Though Puri-Kurla Express (22866) and Kurla-Puri (22865) pass through Dhenkanal-Angul route, the trains
do not stop at Dhenkanal and the passengers willing to board them have to go to Angul or Bhubaneswar, 60 to 90 kms from Dhenkanal. There are 23 trains (Express and Passengers) having stoppage at Dhenkanal but the ticket counter here does not have the authority to issue return journey tickets for Intercity and Passenger trains, particularly for general coach. Due to this, the commuters are forced to stand in long queues at Bhubaneswar and often miss the trains. “At times, to avoid this they board the train without ticket and have to pay fine when asked by the TTEs,” said an Association member. Though the higher authorities were apprised in this regard, no action was taken.
Spokesman of the association, Rudramadhav Mohapatra said even the people’s representatives are callous in putting forward the demands of the people at the Centre. The Railway Ministry is apathetic towards the plight of the passengers, he alleged.
