Venad Express will run on safer LHB coaches within two weeks, says GM, Southern Railway
Problems pertaining to the railway network in the State were discussed in detail at a meeting of MPs from State convened by Southern Railway General Manager R.K. Kulshreshta here on Friday.
Responding to the demands of MPs, Mr. Kulshreshtra said commuter trains, catering to the needs of office-goers and students, would be given priority during peak hours in morning and evening.

running of the16343/16344 Amritha Expresses and 16349/16350 Rajyarani Expresses as independent trains, as demanded by commuters from Malabar, would be looked into. The doubling of the crucial rail corridors via Kottayam and Alappuzha, punctuality of trains, cleanliness of stations and trains, condition of coaches and development of stations came up for discussion at the meet.
Mr. Kulshreshtra said Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches would be introduced in the 16301/16302 Shoranur-Thiruvananthapuram-Shoranur Venad Expresses soon to offer enhanced safety and comfort to passengers.
Southern Railway already has the required three rakes with LHB coaches and the pairing trains will start plying with the new coaches within two weeks.
The move is part of a decision to replace all old coaches of mail and express trains with LHB coaches by 2019-2020.
Developed by Linke-Hofmann-Busch of Germany and produced by the rail coach factory in Kapurthala, the coaches are designed to run at 160 km an hour. With a higher passenger capacity, the coaches are anti-telescopic, which means they do not overturn or flip in case of a collision.
The 12624/12623 Thiruvananthapuram-Chennai Superfast Expresses were the last to get LHB coaches last year.

As part of the Southern Railway’s initiative to go green and save on electricity costs by producing 4 MW of solar power, rooftop solar plants will be installed at 11 stations in Palakkad and Thiruvananthapuram railway divisions.
“As far as the Railways is concerned, it is a win-win situation,” said G Suryanarayana, divisional electrical engineer (general services) Palakkad division. “Currently, the Railways pays a tariff of `8.10 per unit to the KSEB. Once the solar energy is produced, the Railways will need to pay only `3.64 per unit for 25 years as per the deal agreed with Azure Power Rooftop Solutions Pvt Ltd.”

solar plants with a total installed capacity of 390 kilowatt peak (kWp) will be set up at seven stations in Palakkad division — Kozhikode, Mangalore Central, Kannur, Palakkad, Shoranur, Mangalore Junction and Thalassery — and four plants with a total capacity of 300 kWp in Thiruvananthapuram division — Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram, Nagercoil and Thrissur.
Central Electronics Ltd, which is the implementing agency for the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, had floated tenders to install, operate and maintain the solar plants.
The tender document lists A1 category stations such as Ernakulam as well as A and B category stations in the state for the implementation of grid-connected rooftop solar photovoltaic systems atop Railways office buildings and stations. The bids of Azure Power Rooftop Solutions has been finalised for Kerala, revealed Railways officers.
According to Railways sources, contracts and tenders floated for installing the rooftop solar plants were based on developer mode, wherein the project developer will do the site survey, design, manufacture, erection testing and commissioning, including warranty, operation and maintenance of the solar panels.
The Railways has signed a long-term contract for power purchase from these solar plants with the bidder at `3.64 per unit for 25 years.
The cost of installing a 10 kWp plant is `7.3 lakh. In Palakkad, a 10 kWp plant at the divisional railway manager’s office and two 10 kWp plants at the Divisional Railway Hospital are already producing power. Similarly, a 10 kWp plant has been commissioned at the office of the divisional railway manager in Thiruvananthapuram also.

Railways is examining the possibility of building an elevated rail track extending from Thiruvananthapuram to Kasaragod to decongest the railway network, R K Kulshrestha, general manager, Southern Railway said here today.
Speaking to media persons after visiting the Kozhikode railway station as part of the annual inspection on Tuesday, Kulshrestha said that the technical wing of the Railways will be asked to examine the feasibility of building the elevated track.
He said that the project, which would entail an expense of around Rs 57000 crore, is proposed to be implemented on a cost

sharing basis between the central and state governments.
"We are examining the proposal as the elevated track would help avoid the delays associated with land acquisition," he said.
Stating that Railways was focusing on safety along with punctuality, he said that the recent delays in running of trains were due to the ongoing track renewal and track maintenance works. Kozhikode MP M K Raghavan who held talks with the general manager presented a memorandum with a host of demands including introducing MEMU service between Kozhikode and Coimbatore and Kozhikode and Ernakulam. The general manager was accompanied by Commissioner of Railway Safety, Bangalore, K A Manoharan, heads of various railway departments, Divisional Railway Manager of Palakkad Division, Naresh Lalwani and other senior officials.
The general manager also inspected the site for the proposed MEMU shed in Palakkad and also the Palakkad railway station, apart from the Lakkidi, Shoranur and Tirur railway stations.
A meeting of MPs from the state will be held in Thiruvananthapuram on January 19 to discuss the railway development issues of the state.
