पंजाब मेल को ब्रिटिश राज में पंजाब लिमिटेड के नाम से जाना जाता था.यह ट्रेन मुंबई से पेशावर तक 2496 किलोमीटर का सफर तय करती थी.यह रेलगाड़ी विशेष रूप से ब्रिटिश अधिकारियों को लाने-ले जाने के लिए चलाई गई.1930 से पहले पंजाब मेल में आम लोगों के यात्रा करने पर पाबंदी लगी थी.1 जून 1912 को शुरू हुई पंजाब मेल शुरू हुई थी।

more... प्रांत तक ले जाने के लिए चलाई गयी थी. शुरुआत में इसे बल्लार्ड पियर रेलवे स्टेशन से पेशावर तक चलाया गया. साल 1914 में इसका शुरुआती स्टेशन बदलकर विक्टोरिया टर्मिनस (अब मुंबई के छत्रपति शिवाजी टर्मिनस) कर दिया गया. आज़ादी के बाद इसका गंतव्य भारत पाक सीमा पर स्थित फिरोज़पुर स्टेशन कर दिया गया. 1930 से इसमें आम जनता की खातिर थर्ड क्लास के डिब्बे भी लगाए जाने लगे।
पुरानी पंजाब मेल कोयले से चलने वाले इंजन और लकड़ी के कोच के साथ चला करती थी.आज इस ट्रेन में 24 बोगियां है. जबकि शुरुआत में केवल 6 कोच थे. उनमें भी तीन कोच डाक पार्सल के लिए होते थे.

आजादी से दो साल पहले यानी 1945 में पहली बार पंजाब मेल में वातानुकूलित बोगियां लगाई गई. किसी जमाने में इस ट्रेन को ब्रिटिश भारत में सबसे तेज ट्रेन होने का खिताब हासिल था. यात्रियों के बीच आज भी पंजाब मेल काफी लोकप्रिय है👉सन् 1975 में झांसी रेलवे स्टेशन पर खड़ी पंजाब मेल की पुरानी तस्वीर।
