Turntables were a point of prestige for many railways! There were many loco sheds famed for their mechanized turntables. Bitragunta (in SCR) was arguably the most famous BG steam shed in rail-enthusiast circles. While the shed has been shut down for many decades now, you can still see the circular layout of the shed and the turntable on google maps just to the east of the station. The reversal must have been for a very short time. Before Independence, the Punjab mail proceeded straight to Pratapgarh from Varanasi without any reversals - 1943 TT uploaded by Samar on IRFCA - click here . Though this TT does not show intermediate stations between Pratapgarh and Varanasi, note the distance and runtime, both of which are consistent with a run through the shorter route. The same pattern is also seen in accounts from 1917. At least in 1961, the mail did not have any reversals on it's route. The 1961 Parcel loading...
