last year i was returning from kumbakonam to chennai egmore by cholan express. as my house was inbetween chengalpattu and tambaram, i deboarded myself at chengalpattu and took an emu train [2 tier ac ticket and so i boarded first class emu compartment]. the ticket i had was an eticket.
tte told me inbetween that only regular ticket [printed ticket by railways] can only use this option in emu. eticket holders are not entitled to travel by emu with this ticket. however he had not put fine. just cautioned me. may be i am travelling with family and luggage

Makes sense. How can e-ticket be accepted ? How will the TTE validate ?
There is no harm in allowing someone to travel in a paper ticket. It is valid. Am not sure if there is a clear rule on this. But it should be allowed I guess. e-ticket, yes tough to check.
Even the TTE was wrong. A reservation ticket (PRS essentially) containing two parts of journey legs:
Kumbakonam-Tambaram (if train stops) and reservation up to Chengalpattu.
In this case additional info on ticket will be printed like this: SL/ME from Chengalpattu and this only makes passenger eligible to board any train (generally) stops to final destination.

yes sir....u r ryt...the rules r same for both e tkt and prs tkt...its d tte who modify it to extract whatever money possible or harass passengers to the maximum
