The Rameshwaram Express is one one of the oldest trains on this route(VM-MV-KKDI-RMM). the train ran on the main track and was named Boat Mail for connecting to the boat at Danushkodi Island to Sri Lanka-Mail and people used the boat to Sri Lanka from there after all procedural formalities etc completed.
The 1964 Cyclone of Bay of Bengal saw the Danushkodi Island being destroyed by the waves and one of the major disaster of Railway with the train ready to depart being taken away by the waves. The tracks submerged and entire habitation lost. Later a train was introduced on Chord Line (VM-VRI-TPJ) by name Sethu Express

train later ran up to Rameshwaram but the name of Boat Mail stood till the trains on the Meter gauge track between Tambaram and Mayiladuthurai was stopped around 2003-04. The track opened early 2010 and train restored back to the route as Rameshwaram Express with increased speed
