Scissor crossing is done when no proper loop line is available due to geographical limitations.

The most common query about this crossing is that why don't they just make a connection from the loop line to the main line from the point till which the loco moves in the forward direction. This point has been nicely explained in the video[at 5.30 minutes]. The gradient at the end is so high that it is not possible to connect the two lines and hence reversal of the train is required.
