Earlier the station name was Kankanadi & code was KNKD. Later the name of station was changed to Mangaluru Junction & correspondingly the code got changed to MAJN. Believe the name of the area where station is located is Kankanadi; but Railways might have decided to go for the popular name Mangaluru, considering convenience of passengers coming from outside.
Never heard about changing station name along with code. Many stations still uses old station code like BCT,CLT,MAS etc.
What about Mumbai CST?
Earlier its name was Bombay VT & code was BBVT; consequent to renaming, its code too got changed to CSTM.
True that Bombay Central got renamed as Mumbai Central without change in code; stations in & around Chennai retained their codes despite renaming.
