They live there itself including SM. I have footplated in the lead loco while ascending, that time the loco slowed down to take some documents from the SM.

An aside: If you love this section, then you will like the movie Chor Chor (Hindi), Thiruda Thiruda click here where almost the entire action sequences was shot in this section on top of the train during MG era with single GTL loco hauling the train.
