i think this might have to do probably with the rake being stabled at Kannur overnight when compared to CLT-TVC which comes and leaves immediately.
Even Elathur is operational, although there was no major news article, it was opened during GM visit, can be found in the palakkad division's twitter feed.

There is plan to convert passenger train to MEMU. But again rake is required and will take time. Hope with new P7 to RPM, few WAP4&1 gets free, so that i can come to MAQ side..
