psanga_sur^~ 5601 blog postsIn yesterday's meeting with Solapur MP Mr. Sharad Bansode at DRM office, it is decided that SUR Division will be sending proposal of Solapur - Pune - Solapur new Intercity Express due to increased demand in this route.
It is brought to notice that rake of 22139/40 is idle at Solapur for whole day. So CR is decided to use that rake for running day time Intercity between Solapur and Pune with Kurduwadi, Jeur & Daund hault.
Timings of this train likely to be reverse of 12169/70 in both directions. ...

Because of being a division its talked about in IRI like say GTL, else both are far smaller than the cities under them. SUR far smaller than GR and GTL smaller than ATP, HX and TPTY.
The route is aligned on the Chennai-Mumbai line, hence you believe it is the gateway. It is just one of the stations enroute that line thats all.
Take the road transport from Chennai to Mumbai, it doesn't touch Solapur. Erstwhile NH4 (now NH 48).
