* Inspite of a lot of hullabaloo over increasing the speed of trains over IR since last 5 years the like increasing
(1) operating speed of superfast express trains from 110kmph/130kmph to 160kmph/ 200 kmph on trunk lines,
(2) Operating speed of loaded freight trains from 60/70kmph to 100kmph,
(3) Avg. speed of express & freight trains from by 25kmph,
...

Actual achievement till date is far from the target.
* The fact remains that today just 2-3 trains could touch 150kmph barrier for just 150km route length, i.e. just 2% of total IR network!
* There is negligible improvement (may be 1 or 2 kmph) in avg speed of freight/passenger trains
* Owning a rake fit for 200kmph is good but actually operating it at that speed is altogether a different story. LHB coaches owned by IR since last 25 years are designed to operate at 200kmph. Today this 220kmph news is just another lollypop.

It'll be wonderful reality soon. India too will have trains at 200 kmph. In my opinion by the year 2022 work on these will begin. Not talking about bullet trains but our conventional ones.

Reason is we focussed more on high end loco development then improving tracks/curves/bridges and signaling systems.
Result is we are unable to harness the full mps power of even an wap4 or wdp4b but still we are improving to wag9hi/hc ..wap5h/wdg5.
For freight movement some what justified for power need but for pax movement it is redundant

Because main thing is tracks and not trainsets. We had Wap5 in 2000 and LHB in 2003. Wap 5 and WDP4 are capable of 180kph in trials and 160kph in commercial runs( for Wap5). So trainset-wise we were capable of going at 160kph in 2003 itself. But problem was tracks. Still now we have the same tracks, no upgrade. We can build trainsets which go at 180 or 220 kph but they run on tracks, not on thin air. Unless tracks and sleepers are replaced it is difficult to expect speed increase. Forget 150, even 130 is possible only on HWH-NDLS and NDLS-BCT which is only 5% of the tracks.

* Improving the tracks/curves/bridges need huge investment as well as operational difficulties, so difficult to materialise.
* Improvement in rolling stocks (Lightweight construction, Trainsets for more & distributed power, tilting mechanism for curves) need lesser investment and is convenient, but can give only marginal benefits.
