I visited SMVT last Saturday to catch a train. Things have now improved in terms of connectivity. There were around 4-5 BMTC buses (around morning 8 AM) and there was fair amount of crowd present there. Also, enough ola/uber and autos were present right outside the station.
I agree to the point that there should be more bus connectivity considering the fact that autos and cabs would be costly, but things are improving slowly at SMVT.
