1) There was some messed up train thing happening in Howrah. It made trips shorter after they changed routes. Didn't have a different path before.
2) There are like 21 spots for trains. 14 up in Sealdah North and 7 in Sealdah South.
3) Spots 1-8 are only for the shorter rides like Sealdah Main or Sealdah Dankuni, so only 12 coach trains can go there. Spots 9 and 10 can fit 18 coaches, while 11-14 can hold 24.
4) Howrah and Sealdah are split by a crazy river. Since Kolkata's a big port, building more bridges could mess up ship traffic and hurt the economy. They're working on linking Howrah and Sealdah with the subway, though.
5) Building a spot for Vande Bharat trains in Sealdah, but fancy trains like Shatabdi and JS don't start there because it's known for overnight trains mostly.
6) The train routes in Sealdah Division aren't too packed with cargo or passengers, except for the local ones. That's why they think double tracks are enough to handle the traffic. Seems like Mumbai's a whole other story. I ain't sure why, but any train buff in Kolkata would probably know better than me. Hope this is helpful for you.
