i checked for availability of tickets for this train for FC- first class coach in irctc.co.in and the available tickets were 16. the very next morning i went to reservation office and booked two tickets. when i checked online the availability is still 16..how is that possible?

Its under ND Quota...which is Day-Night Quota...In FC 4 Berth Coupe 6 people are alloted for Day travel and since it is not an overnight journey so your booking didnot affect the Availability.

Had always thought that in a 4-berth cabin in FC, 4 passengers are only allowed, be it day or night. This is totally new thing. Thanks for sharing this.
Arijit is right. 6 in the day and 4 in the night. That is the capacity for a berth coupe in 1st class. I think the same arrangement is applicable in 1st AC too, though I am not sure. Similarly for a 2 berth coupe the capacity is 3 in the day and 2 in the night.
Shows the stingy nature of Indian Railways. After Paying so much for first class travel, why shud the passengers' comfort be compromised!
