I will give a example.
suppose you create a program to fetch information from some server it will keep doing so unless something unexpected happens. this process will make sure that the program is not able to fetch information continuously. as soon as number of attempts are over the captcha page will appear and program having no knowledge of the same will not able to function and fetch further information. whereas a person doing so will easily proceed further by entering captcha. and even if the program is designed for captcha still it will fail as the numbers provided are random..

ntes uses it. mntes was also using it earlier, but since its a mobile site after some modification it was removed from mntes being a mobile site
