I wish to travel from Chennai to Thiruvannamalai. Since my time of travel is not very fixed, I'd like to take the most frequently available train / route
I'd prefer to do the entire trip by train, preferably in reserved compartments.,
However since direct trains are very few, I'm ready to change trains and / or take the last leg by bus. What are the ideal and most frequent alternatives ?

Well, the best forever course, if not for rail fanning, from Chennai to Tiruvannamalai is bus, bus, bus. You have buses every 15 minutes from Koyambedu via Vadapalani, Ashok Pillar, Guindy, Tambaram, Tindivanam. You don't have to go as far as VM.
.
If its solely for rail fanning, then VM, but again, in my personal opinion, I do not think its worth the roundabout route. Electrics have also not been given green yet, I suppose.
