Bullet trains "may" steal many flight passengers, especially students and holidayers which will help bleed the already bleeding airlines in India.
even if bullet trains becomes reality in India, don't expect the fares to be cheaper than flights, as the cost of infrastructure to setup will need to be recovered so that network can be expanded.
yes the costs for construction will be exorbitantly high as it will require completely new tracks, of course with a much better quality. Also a lot of land has to be acquired which is an uphill task itself. But if the fares become costlier than those of the airlines, the purpose will get defeated and may become a white elephant project especially after the arrival of Air Asia which claims that its fares are going to be cheaper than the present low cost carriers.
I guess, the timings of this train is one of the reason it was killed. Starting from bhopal at 6 is not a good time at all. Instead, it should have been kept 8 from bhopal, it might have got some passengers
