Just observed on Google maps, the line from JAT to SVDK via UHP is around 80 km whereas the road route via Nagrota is 50 km, Railways never bothered to take the shorter route and instead connected it to UHP to lengthen it..Ideally the line should have been constructed via Nagrota and the terrain is not at all unsuitable. What a waste of time...people taking a horseshoe curve from JAT to SVDK and first negotiating the gradient from JAT to UHP and then the gradient further to SVDK.
I know many of you would not bother to comment on this coz ab line bichh chuki hai..but just a thought from my side.

If you talk about terrain and condition of soil, JAT-UHP-SVDK is far more difficult and mountainous as compared to the usual road route. The road route is very simple and a track parallel to it could have been possible. Regarding connectivity with imp stations enroute, UHP is the only one and I think 2 separate routes could have been worked out, UHP-SVKD and JAT-SVKD.
The only point of yours which makes sense could be the permission for land as almost entire Nagrota is under Indian Army and it maybe likely that they may have refused to approve the line to pass through the Cantt area for security reasons.

I have travelled quite a bit to Vaishno Devi and I am sure most of us in our life would have been there atleast once, have you seen the road route challenging at all from Jammu to Katra?
So its not just about observing the Google map thing sir, I feel IR never wanted to duplicate the task of JAT-SVKD and UHP-SVKD and hence consolidated it as JAT-UHP-SVKD and like I just mentioned now, Army presence in Nagrota could have been a roadblock too.

Udhampur is an important military base to regiments across Himalayas.
Hence rail connectivity is very important.
