Just one more question... Do I have to go t o the station to find out whether I will get a seat if I'm WL1, or do they inform me somehow. Either via email or by updating the status on my PNR online? It seems like a huge pain in the ass to have to go all the way to the station to find out that you don't have a seat...

Continuing Vinay Sir's explanation, you can also book your pet into the luggage van after paying some charges.
Anyways, try to get yourself a confirmed ticket to save yourself from unnecessary troubles.
