So I went to the local reservation counter to book the tickets for this train and the booking clerk says that they simply can't allot LB from the system for this train! This when 400 tickets were available!
I further asked him what more can't he book, and he replied that they can't book LB and SLB for this train. He also confirmed the fact with other booking clerks!

Check the document. Here lies the reason. There are so many configurations for GR coaches and CRIS apparently is clueless about which one goes with which coach of which train.
So a LB in layout 1, maybe a SMB in layout 2 or a UB in layout 3.

Dear 12658 Chennai Mail*^ : Yes I did, he backed up the booking clerk. :(
Dear rfZ** : That's what I did in the end! Tried booking online and gave SMB as a preference for 2 tickets, ended up with SLB and MB ! You can't second guess the twisted logic of CRIS. :D
