Was wondering why most rake compositions have AC coaches somewhere in the middle... surrounded by SL and/or GEN compartments. Is there a set of rules/ guidelines in terms of rake composition from IR?

Most of the trains leaving howrah have AC coaches in the rear. Corromandel and Chennai howrah-mail have AC coaches in the rear when they leave chennai or howrah, but when they reach destination it is in the front

it is moslty in the either end after general compartments. Reason being, shunting becomes easy, then the movement of Sleeper class people to get to other sleeper class boggies is restricted through AC compartments...

That is because there is a rake reversal @ VSKP.So the front becomes back and the back becomes front.Simply said.

Quite a few members have posted that AC coaches are not in the middle.. my own personal experience has been quite opposite. In almost all trains I have travelled (largely in the NDLS-HWH sector), the AC coaches have been in the middle, splitting Sleeper coaches into two sub-sections.. maybe its a zonal thing?

That's what my observation was too. It perfectly makes sense to have SL and AC together for the corridor, but why split SL?
