Rail infrastructure needs to be improved in Shimoga district big-time. Presently, it looks like the district has been barred from receiving rail connectivity to any region other than Bangalore and Mysore.
I wonder why the representatives of the region, have not demanded a train to Hubli (or even Mumbai) yet. I just checked out on Cleartrip that Shimoga to Birur Junction takes about an hour from where a train can reach Hubli between 3.5 to 5 hours. Assuming a slack time for 15 minutes for engine reversal, the maximum time a train should take to do the Shimoga - Hubli route should be about 6 hours.

course, I have'nt overlooked the fact that it takes no more than 3.5 to 4 hours to reach Hubli from the city, by road (according to Google). But when we have trains like Mysore - Bagalkot (via Bangalore, Gulbarga & Bijapur), or Mysore - Hubli via Bangalore and Bellary, overnight services on the Shimoga - Mumbai / Kolhapur etc. routes via Hubli, can be started; improved connectivity to Hubli can also fetch the city, a train to Hyderabad and beyond.
What can't there be a Shimoga - Yeshwantpur - Banaswadi - Whitefield - Chennai train???? When Hubli can get a train to Trivandrum (Kochuveli) via Yeshwantpur, why not Shimoga??? I hope Shimoga - Shikaripur - Ranebennur line for the benefit of the district.
