----------------------------- Decision Needs To be Revisited On Practical Ground by IR & CLW _______________________
Ref: /blog/post/1513533
We have presently the following strength in Indian Railways:
Conventional Locos: 4190(Out of Which 85 are WCAM Class AC-DC Loco)
3
...
Phase Locos: (Goods: 576 Passenger: 304): 880
Source: click here
Total Trains in Indian Railways: 3681(As per IRI records)
Now out of these 3681 Trains of IR 85% are hauled by Conventional Loco which has a huge stock than the total number of Trains of IR. Only 15% of these 3681 Trains are hauled by 3 Phase Locos.
Now I have a doubt is the entire 3 Phase Stock(880 Locos) are utilized 100% in IR?
As because Conventional Locos are "Completely Utilized" by IR we all know this and "Conventional Goods Locos" are also used for hauling trains.
But is the entire 3 Phase Stock(880 Locos) are 100% utilized by IR?
If IR won't utilize all it's 3 Phase Loco completely then the decision of switching over to 3 Phase (100%) from the next year by CLW won't be fruitful for IR as because at that time also the "Entire Burden" will be shifted to "Conventional Locos" like now and as "3 Phase Locos" are "Expensive" it should be utilized to it's full potential.
It's a matter of Deep Concern and as declared by Hon'ble RM, I think "Energy Audit"and "Cost Audit for both Maintenance and Operational Costs" should be made separately for "Conventional Loco" and "3 Phase Loco" so that "Illusion free Real Picture" can be produced before the Rail Ministry about the "Performance" of these two Loco Class and train all the LP's and staffs about 3 Phase Loco which is "VERY CRUCIAL" I think before IMPLEMENTING THE DECISION OF totally "SHUT DOWN THE PRODUCTION OF CONVENTIONAL LOCO" by CLW on and from 2016. If 100% Switchover to 3 Phase is mandatory seems to IR then "Bold Instruction" should be given to ALL ZONES which will COMPEL them to take and use 3 Phase Loco to it's full Potential which is a "VERY COSTLY ROLLING STOCK".(Each 3 Phase Cost 14 crore which is 6 Crore more than Conventional Ones)

I understood that it saves power. But how is it related to Itarsi incident?

I took that example to show the huge loss made by IR due to this incident and the poor financial condition of IR.

The situation is not like this all zones. SR and SCR are actually making good use of their allotted WAP7's. After RPM started getting P7's, LGD's burden reduced and now quite a few trains (including a few crawlers) in SCR are getting LGD P7's and RPM P7's are a common sight now in MAS-SBC and MAS-CBE routes. In fact, instead of keeping them idle, SWR is using them to run even very short distance express/passengers like SBC-BWT exp and SBC-Marikuppam passenger.
Sometimes there are sensible reasons for changing the loco link too. For example, 12737/38 CCT-SC Gautami express was expected to get a WAP 7 end-to -end (Ran a few trips with WAP 7 I think) but was

reverted to WAP4 later. Upon inquiry I was told that since there was no daily train going out of CCT with e-loco (with reliable timings) between early morning and night from CCT, they had no option but to keep the P7 idle the whole day (more than 13 hrs) and as the number of P7 locos was few at that time, they could not afford to keep them idle.
However, this is only for SCR and SR that I frequently travel through. Other zones might have different problems. Nonetheless, no need to worry, 3 phaser's will not lie unused. Given their relatively lesser maintenance requirements, once the adoption starts it will increase rapidly.

I do hope so. CLW already changed it's entire infrastructure for 3 Phase Loco and production of 3 Phasers of 6000 HP(WAP-5/WAP-7/WAG-9) has been started with a "FULL SWING" in CLW and it's Ancillary Unit in Dankuni, West Bengal . Let this drive of CLW and IR will succeed.
