Good News! Way ahead
Travellers at major railway stations in the state, including Egmore, will be able to use WiFi before the end of 2016 as Google has decided to support RailTel's ongoing project.
After success of the pilot project at Chennai Central, RailTel plans to install WiFi at 14 railway stations categorised as A1 and A in Tamil Nadu. Most major stations like Chennai Egmore, Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy , Salem, Erode, Thanjavur, Tirunelveli and Tuticorin come under this category .

CEO Sundar Pichai in a blog said, "Working with Indian Railways, which operates one of the world's largest railway networks, and RailTel, which provides Internet services as RailWire via its extensive fibre network along many of these railway lines, our Access & Energy team plans to bring the first stations online in the coming months."
The network will cover 100 of the busiest stations by 2016, helping 10 million people go online. A map posted with the blog showed Madurai, Trichy and three places near Chennai as stations that will get WiFi along with the 100 stations Google is planning.
A senior RailTel official said, "Google will take part in the project that we've been working on. The existing WiFi facility at Central will be improved further while similar connections will be installed at other stations. Our immediate target is 14 stations in Southern Railway ."
The system launched at Central in September 2014 has a signal booster to maintain 512kbps bandwidth speed for up to 60m. Travellers can access internet on their computers and smartphones for free in the first 30 minutes.
