Somehow the DD concept is not going down well with passengers, with most of them ending up as white elephants. Even the ones that are running with decent patronage, like the SBC-MAS DD are never the 1st priority for passengers as I observed. Between SBC-MAS itself, Shatabdhi ( both MYS and SBC ) are more preferred than DD as first priority.
Besides, the fare difference is hardly 200 Rs for 350Km and Shatabdi has breakfast/dinner as well ( partly reason for higher fare), not to mention, better and more comfortable seating in Shatabdi over DD.
