Remarks on items concerning electric locomotives are given below:
(i) Condemnation of WAM-4 class of locomotives which is more than 35 to 40 years old:

The codal life of electric locos is 35 years after which these are inspected by a high level committee of officers from Mechanical, Electrical and Finance Departments of the concerned Railway and taking into consideration condition of the locomotive in terms of safety, decision for its condemnation is taken. The usable parts of condemned locos are used as spares for other in-service locos.
(ii) Replacement of WAM-4 locos with WAP-5, WAP-7 and WAG-9 locos:

Already WAM-4 locos are being gradually replaced with new generation locos based on their age-cum-condition. Further, it has been decided that CLW shall be manufacturing only three-phase locos (WAP-5, WAP-7 & WAG-9) from 2016-17.
(iii)Production of 5000 HP single phase DC locos i.e. WAP-4 & WAG-7 should be stopped and only IGBT traction powered 3-phase locos should be produced:

It has been decided by Indian Railways that 100% production of CLW from 2016-17 onwards shall be of 3-Phase locos.
