******Regarding Indian Railways in North/North East*******
The north and north east regions of India are filled with awesome sight seeing and wonders of nature. I had a thought that when Railway lines are laid down to connect these with central India, why not immediately electrify them. Diesel locos cause lot of pollution which disrupts these serene beauties. While laying the new tracks, IR can electrify them. Just a thought. Can be pondered about it. Need your views.

Electrification also leads to a lot of pollution ( Thermal power plants burn coal and create pollution, hydro projects destroy lot of ecosystems). Electrification also involves a lot of initial capital. In the long run, it might not always be useful. It can even deprive the local households and industries of electricity.
Also, in heavily forested areas and such sensitive spots, the OHE poles and the high voltage cables overhead intrude in the ecosystem and potentially impact the habitats. Non-electrified lines, however are not very intrusive and minimize the impact on the surroundings.
