Hrishikesh Sandilya~ 51 blog postsSir, I have a question. This train runs from Amritsar to Vishakhapatnam. On it's way it passes through Sambalpur in Orissa. If I am not mistaken Hirakund is a small town near Sampbalpur in Orissa.
SO, why is this train named Hirakund Express, when it neither starts or terminates at Hirakund (Sambalpur) ?

Bhai this train is very old train and earlier it used to run between NZM and Sambalpur. Hence its name is Hirakud Express. It is more popularly known as Sambalpur express till today in the region of Saugor, Damoh, KTE, Shahdol, Anuppur and Bilaspur.
Later this train was extended till BBS and used to run between NZM and BBS. Again it was extended in both directions and now it runs between Amritsar - VSKP. But its name is still Hirakud Express.
I still call it Sambalpur Express :D

Hirakud is a dam on mahanadi river in the vicinity of sambalpur city. Originally train ran from SBP to NZM and hence got the name.
