If I am correct, freight trains nearly always occupy the main line(as well as the loop line) at Palam. When I was in Delhi(near Palam railway station), there was hardly a day when the station was free from freight trains.
I've seen them mostly covering the mainline, other freights/Express trains skip the station through the loop line.
By loop line, i meant basically PF # 3 and the line next to it. Trains going towards Rewari side skip normally via PF#2(main line), while trains towards DEE/DLI skip taking through loop(PF#1).
Yes, you're right. Trains moving towards Rewari barely make an halt. On the other hand, freight trains moving towards DEC mostly halts on the mainline and the loop lines adjacent to PF-3.
