No railways in the world earns from passenger trains. Its the freight which fetches profit. And not all departments can be run on profit:loss ratio, had it been we need to shut down government hospitals and institutions which run free of cost leading to heavy loss.

Its insensitive of railways to underline the loss they are suffering to its passengers. The rates have been decided by them, and whatever be the reason, the passengers are paying it. The cancellation charges many a times is 50% to 100% of total fare (class 2s/FC/Tatkal/Suvidha). For other classes/ trains also its substantially high.

Instead of minting money through such means, a direct increment of fare by 20% for non ac class would be advisable. Passengers dont want services for free but it hurts one, when they cough out 120 rs. Cancellation charge for a 140 rs. Ticket 4 months before departure. Even private hotels and airlines refund 50% most of the times.

I understand that the earlier ministries due to political reasons, or whatever, have failed to raise the fare and with an increase in man power, salaries as per latest pay Commission and fuel charges, railways r suffering, but printing that on common man ticket, what purpose does it serve? They wanna show we are being done a favour? Ok agreed, now what next? We should purchase 2 tickets for a single passenger tRavel to help railways recover from the loss? This is not done Mr. RM. You cant reduce the rates and then make us aware, u have done so. Its like you have brought gifts for me and Everytime remind me of the same !!
