It is quite good if you travel by 3AC (not that SL is not clean). It's a good train with nice pantry... MGS to PNBE will be roughly 200-250km

MGS to Varanasi Jn. is 15-16 kms distance only. If affordable, travel is comfortable in 3AC, or otherwise SL for the most economical fare.

many, many people travel between MGS and Varanasi. only about 15 kms as kapadia-ji says. In the Varanasi area, the share-autorickshaw system works. You just sit in an empty auto, and he will wait about 10 mts. for other people to fill up the auto. So, you just pay your share, which is very cheap. The trip to Varanasi Godowlia (centre of town) will take about 45 minutes or so. You will enjoy it, no doubt, chatting with co-travellers in the auto.
My experience is from 6 years back. I don't know if things have changed.
