A technical query being posed to members here. Usually it is seen that when a train is on the move and green signal is on, the moment the engine passes/crosses the same it immediately turns to red. Is this automatic ?. Is there some kind of underground or overhead link either near the tracks or overhead wires, which is able to detect the engine crossing the signal and thus accordingly make it turn green.
Any idea how does this principle work ? Is it controlled centrally ?

there is circuit near the tracks as the train passes circuit breaks and signal eventually turns red after crossing appropriate distance the signal turns yellow and finally green.
