Conspiracy theory: Railway Board has taken upon itself to destroy IR.
Flexi fare is a scheme meant to destroy railways and let the aviation sector win more easily. The premium trains are the sector which are competing with airways and a price rise there will mean a win for aviation. Shatabdi are day class trains and seats fill at the last time, by rising fares, they literally made them empty. Durontos are a failed concept on many routes and couldn't take the price hike.Even Mumbai Raj couldn't fill all seats on few days.
"Tickets

under current booking shall be sold at the last price sold for that class and other supplementary charges like reservation fee, superfast charges." If seats are not filled until the last minute, what makes more sense, selling them at the original price or the higher price.
Flexi fare increases fare from the start and caps it at 1.5x when 50% of the seats are reserved, thus leaving the rest 50% of the seats doomed[few purchase them at the high price]. Think why IR didn't start dynamic fare principle on these trains where price is set via demand. In that case, if a train is not getting pax, the fare will automatically be lowered and attract passengers. Think why IR didn't increase fares of those trains that are in constant demand. Many non-Raj trains remain in super demand all through the year and a small price rise there wouldn't have done anything. If IR is so hard pressed for revenues, why aren't they increasing suburban rates where literally there is no competition. And ultimately, why are they still running so many loss making trains.
From what I see, either the RB is full of stupid people who literally have no idea what they are doing or they are in bed with the aviation industry and are willingly destroying the railways. I can't see any other reason for their rash decisions.
Call me foolish or paranoid but I see no other reason as to why RB is doing such things.

Hota kya hai na decision already liya ja chuka tha, aur us time sarkar par u-turns lene ki tohmat lag rahi thhi. Agar ye faisla roll back hota ( jo ki janhit mein hota) to jo opposition parties flexi fare ka virodh kar rahi hain, wo hi dobara bolte ki govt mein sirf PM ki chalti hai, mantri ko free hand nahi milta wagairah, wagairah. Shayad isi se bachne ke liye aisa kiya gaya ho. Ya koi aur kaaran bhi raha ho. Lekin jo bhi ho ab trial period / experiment khatam karne ka decision le lena chahiye. Aur agar revenue badhana hai to ya to kuch innovative ideas laaye jo janhit mein ho nahi to direct sabhi segment mein including suburban mein kuch badhotari kar dein. Aise faaltu schemes se bachna chahiye.

Acc to news sources unke (pm, manoj sinha, amit shah) virodh ke baad hi kaha gaya ki experimental basis par hai. Ab to prabhu hi decide karenge ki ye experiment kab tak chalega. Asha hai diwali ke avsar par prabhu ko prabhu ne sadbuddhi di hogi aur apna current avtaar chhod ke phir se wo apne kursi sambhalne ke baad waale avtaar mein aayenge .

This whole idea of flexi fare is not going to work if they railways want to cover up the losses. Remember, its not feasible to increase profits in the short run. The model of Indian railways needs to be scaled down. Rather than working as a humongous and uncontrollable organisation, its better to break it up into different zones and made to function as a PSU, with both the govt as well as the public having equal stake.
For IR to come out of RED, it has to reduce costs, not increase revenue since operational expenses will proportionately rise with more operations.

levels has to improve, freight costs need to be reduced. Otherwise IR will continue to bleed.
As far as i understand, Mr. Modi has given a free hand to his ministers and hardly does ever intervene in their work. Hence rest assured that this issue will get raised up in the next review meeting and as far i can make out, railway babu`s and prabhu both may be given nice music.

I expect some changes after the winter session of the pariliament

Wow this thing has picked up. Just to be clear i do not necessarily think that our Railways is doomed and that a conspiracy is happening. It is just a forum to vent my anger over the rash decisions. I still hope that the RM understands the situation, rolls back the flexi fare and implement a bettee dynamic fare system.
