I booked 6 tkts for Chalukya express up and down in 3A. For 11017 I saw max RAC seats as 12 as there were 2-3AC coaches. But return journey, I see only 8 RAC seats though returning 11018 also has 2-3AC coaches. Can anybody explain why there is a difference.

Yes true. May be the starting station zone gets to define the query and it is their call.
I am not sure. But in many cases there are differences in the way they define total number of RAC, and as you say mostly same with LB also.

It is each railway zone's discretion how to define berths.
[Example] <From Dadar to Bangalore, the train will have GN quota for DR, PQ, then RL quotas for Pune and Miraj. While from Bangalore to Dadar, the train may have GN quota for Bangalore, PQ, RL quotas for UBL.> So the berth allotments to GN, PQ, different station RL quotas may vary in up and down direction. And hence the number of RAC berths.

#Short feedback on my Travel#
1. 11017 is a good train, runs on time, quite pleasing surrounding en route the journey.
2. 3AC coach was new (guess LHB), manufactured in FEB 2011. (Will post the pictures from home).
3. Food was not good though. We carried from home as we had kids with us.
