Why Locos run with front pantograph up during winter, foggy conditions or heavy rainfall?
Answer-- It is because of the dew during winter season. The extreme cold weather conditions cause the formation of dew which might affect the working of the servo motor which is connected to the small air tanks,which lifts the pantograph. The cool dew or even frost sometimes might jam the motor and affect the working of pantograph. The metal strip on the pantograph assures that the water does not fall below the panto. The metal strip (as seen in the picture) just spreads away the water collected by the panto during motion. It is there to prevent the servo motors mounted below the panto from any possible damage by water.
You might have observed that small metallic strip on the pantos of WAP 7 and WAP 4E too...!!
