It used to be a junction a few decades ago. At the time, VSKP station was known as Waltair, and the actual Visakhapatnam station used to be a couple of kilometres further up the line. The HWH and MAS bound lines bifurcated at Waltair and it was a junction station with three originating lines. In due time, the old Visakhapatnam station was completely abandoned and Waltair (which is now a suburb of VSKP) was renamed as Visakhapatnam, while the junction tag remained as is.
