Going by rules, you cannot enter a reserved coach with a waiting ticket. You are only allowed to board General compartment, that too if the ticket is a paper ticket (from PRS window or i-ticket from IRCTC). If it is an e-ticket, all Waiting tickets get auto-cancelled during chart preparation and you receive refund after 3-4 working days in your original account/card used for booking the ticket.
Unofficially, a lot of people with waiting tickets travel standing in SL coaches during the day, and sleep in corridors, near toilets or between berths in night - after bribing TCs.
