does a loco pilot itself brings the loco from loco shed to the train that needs to get attached or does shunter does it?

All major stations have dedicated LPs who are assigned with shunting duty; not only locos, but attaching/detaching coaches, parcel vans etc. But in smaller stations/stations without dedicated shunters, duty LPs are responsible for doing shunting duty.
From shed, locos are ferried to/from station by shed staff only, i suppose.
