Introduced as Trivandrum - New Bongaigaon express on January 30th, 1984 and was extended to Guwahati in a short while. Until the introduction of the Himsagar express, this train had the longest run in Indian railways. In later years, more trains sharing the time slot were introduced between Howrah/Guwahati and Bangalore/Cochin/Howrah.

This trains running days have been changed multiple times over the years. By 1990, the train had been upgraded to a superfast with the number 2601/02. Soon this train along with the Cochin-Guwahati and Bangalore-Guwahati expresses was transferred to NFR, based out of Guwahati and the train lost it's superfast status (now renumbered as 5627/28). From December 1st, 2006, it regained it's SF status and the number was changed to the present 2515/16.
